How auspicious wedding dates are chosen in Vedic astrology — a complete guide

Dr. Radhika Aggarwal  ·  7 min read  ·  Updated September 2026

Every NRI family knows this conversation. The venue is negotiable, the guest list is negotiable — the DATE is not. “Pandit ji se date nikalwao.” And they’re right to insist, even if nobody at the table can explain exactly why.

A wedding date is the birth chart of the marriage itself. The moment you take your pheras, the sky writes a kundli for the relationship — and just as no two people share a chart, no two couples should share a generic “good date” pulled from a website list. Here is how a real muhurat is chosen, and what it protects you from.

What an astrologer actually checks

The Panchang — five limbs of the day. Every date is measured on tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (constellation), yoga, karana and vaar (weekday). Certain combinations bless beginnings; others quietly undermine them.

The nakshatras that favour marriage. Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati are the classical marriage nakshatras. A date inside one of these, clean of afflictions, is the starting point.

Venus and Jupiter — the marriage planets. Venus rules love; Jupiter rules the sanctity of the bond. Both must be awake in the sky: when either is combust or setting, the season itself is avoided — this is why traditional calendars have “no wedding” months.

The periods every muhurat avoids. Pitru Paksha, Chaturmas, Kharmas, major eclipses, and Venus/Jupiter combustion windows. Half the “unlucky marriage” cases I’ve seen over 15 years trace back to a convenient date booked inside one of these windows because the hall was available.

Why the couple’s charts matter more than the calendar

Here is what generic date lists miss entirely: a date that is auspicious for one couple can be ordinary for another. The muhurat must be matched to both kundlis — the couple’s moon signs, their doshas (manglik status especially), and the dashas running at the time of marriage. Kundli matching first, muhurat second. That’s the correct order, always.

A date that’s perfect in Delhi can shift into a different tithi entirely by the time it’s evening in Toronto. The muhurat must be calculated for the place of the wedding.

This matters double for NRI weddings, where the ceremony may happen in New Jersey while the family panchang runs on India time. This detail is missed constantly — and it’s never missed in my work.

Strengthening the bond after the date is set

The date starts the marriage; devotion sustains it. Simple practices I prescribe to every couple: worship Radha–Krishna together for the quality of love you want to embody · offer arghya to the Moon on full-moon evenings for emotional connection · donate white items on Fridays (Venus’s day) · eat together without screens — the oldest remedy of all.

Questions couples ask

We already booked the venue — can the date be checked afterwards?
Yes, and it should be. If the date carries an affliction, there are remedies and ritual adjustments that soften it — but only if we know in advance.

Does the muhurat need to be calculated for the wedding city or for India?
For the wedding city, always. Tithis and nakshatras shift with time zones; a correct muhurat is location-specific.

What if the only workable dates fall in an avoided period?
An honest astrologer will tell you plainly and find the nearest clean window. What I never do is bless a bad date because it’s convenient — that helps no one.

Is kundli matching really necessary before choosing the date?
Yes — the order matters. Matching reveals the doshas the muhurat then needs to account for. A date chosen without matching is a suit stitched without measurements.
